| The cycle of addiction often
starts off when a person has an uncomfortable thought, feeling
or experience that he/she is unable to deal with. Often addiction
starts with other substances and activities in childhood and
early adulthood before a person decides to try drugs or alcohol.
If this uncomfortable feeling cannot be fixed through healthier
means that have been used in the past, or if a person does not
have any good coping skills, drugs and alcohol become an easy
out. In the beginning most people believe that they are just
“experimenting” or that drug addiction would never
happen to them. This is very common, however this type of denial
is what stifles people from coming to terms with their problem
early on. If a person believes that drugs and alcohol are solving
their problems, then chances are they will continue to turn
to these substances as a way to solve their problems. Not all
people who use drugs and alcohol to cope become addicts, however
these uncomfortable feelings coupled with the use of inherently
addictive substances often strengthens the cycle of addiction.
Once a person is hooked on drugs or alcohol, they may find that
they are unable to control the way that they use substances.
In many cases people disregard activities and relationships
that were once important to them in order to put more effort
and focus into using. For some people this process happens overnight,
but for others it takes a long time for the progression to mature.
Addiction is deadly, and if not treated or retarded, it can
kill those who suffer from it. Addicts who have hit their bottoms
and want help may opt for treatment, and still others may be
confronted through the intervention process and given the option
for recovery. In any case addiction hurts the sufferer and those
around him/her. Recovery from addiction is possible, find help
